Evaluation Question 7
Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
From our preliminary task to our final piece we have learnt a lot about different techniques that can be used. Our knowledge of these techniques have broaden and are now of a good standard.
The comparison between the lengths of each video was very different. Our preliminary task had to be around 30 seconds long and no longer, but the final task had to be between 2 minutes and 2 1/2 minutes. Coming up with film ideas proved to be quite a difficult task, we came up with many ideas, but we thought we had to choose an idea that did not conform to all horror conventions. We followed the same instructions when in the process of making both videos, we used storyboards, shooting schedules and scripts.
Our final task needed a lot longer to plan. This was because it needed to be very detailed in order for us to create a good final piece. We had to create a storyboard of 40 shots, this created a clear structure for us to follow during filming. We also created a mood board to create inspiration, this made us more motivated to create a good opening task.
Research time was very limited when creating our preliminary. We took longer to fully collect research, we needed to find out the type of clothing they wore in a typical horror movie, the sound effects and music that is used and the typical setting.
Overall we have grown to understand different techniques that are used throughout the process of making a film. Our knowledge of terminology has also developed very well.

Our Opening Font Analysis
Font Analysis
We used a font website known as 1001fonts.com in order to find the font that would work best with the theme of our opening. Initially, we chose three fonts that we believed would look good. These being;
- Vtks Sonho
- Mailart Rubberstamp
- Feral
We decided not to chose Vtks Sonho as our font because it is too complex for our opening. We just wanted a simple font that worked well with our theme.
We also didn't chose Mailart Rubberstamp because we wanted the lettering to be a bit faded. We wanted it to be faded to represent a ghostly shadow. It also shows the end of life, as if something has faded away.
We discussed each font, we ended up choosing Feral.
We chose Feral because it looks very simple, we didn't want a font that looked too obvious. This being groovy ghosties.
This font looks as if it was fading away, this links to the idea of death and the afterlife,as they have already faded away.

Forecast Planning
Before we started filming, we made sure that we kept an eye out for changes in the weather. We needed to film without being disrupted by rain and wind etc.
This is the actual temperature for the week we began filming. Tuesday 21st to Friday 3rd was the week we began to film.
What was the weather like during filming?
During filming, the weather turned out to be very windy, this effected our situation because it resulted us in filming inside. However, this meant that we were able to create the effect of being outside in the dark because we pulled down the blinds. On the third day of filming it was sunny, so we were able to go outside and film the remaining parts of our opening.

Introduction of Technologies that have impacted or changed Film PDME
After serving more than 120 years as the dominant projection format in movie theatres, the reign of celluloid 35 mm will come to an end in two short months when the majority of cinema screens go digital.
In January 2012, digital technology took over 35 mm celluloid, this is known as the crossover point. By the end of 2012, the share of 35 mm declined by 37% of global cinema screens, whilst digital accounting for 63%. This represents a dramatic decline for 35mm, which was used in 68 percent of global cinema screens in 2010. In 2015, 35mm will be used in just 17 percent of global movie screens, relegating it to a niche projection format. This was a projected figure.
The decline in demand and manufacturing and the rise in prices and raw material costs could cause consolidation among the film stock supplier base, with the three major players in this area possibly being whittled down to just one by the time 35mm demand ends completely.

A similar phenomenon is occurring in the demand for 35mm film prints, which is declining sharply as more screens are digitised.
The End of an Era
In the United States, there will be no more mainstream 35mm usage from the end of 2013.
For Western Europe, this event may happen at the end of 2014, given the large number of countries and the possibility of public support.
The rest of the world will then be under some pressure to follow suit. Because of this, 35mm will see its last mainstream usage by the end of 2015.
While the era of 35mm will end at this time, there will still be some older films circulating in print for some cinemas. Ironically, these last prints may have a high value as they circulate among a relatively small number of theatres dedicated to keeping the legacy of traditional film alive.

Avatar changed everything
When Avatar was released in 2009, this represented the pivotal moment for the digital market. However, before Avatar, digital represented only a small portion of the digital market. It only accounted for 15% of global screens in 2009. After Avatar, digital’s share grew by leaps and bounds, jumping by 17 percentage points in both 2010 and 2011, compared to the single-digit increases during the previous years.

The Importance of Cross-Media Convergence and Synergy
Cross-Media Convergence- refers to come companies coming together vertically or horizontally.
Synergy- when the interaction of two or more forces working together creates greater effect than the sum of their individual efforts.
Media Synergy- the way in which different elements of a media conglomerate work together to promote linked products.
Trailer Comparison
Both films include a lot of violence which is what you expect to see in thriller types of films. Sci-Fi films also include futurism, for example Hardcore Henry has futuristic technology his legs aren’t real and neither are his arms. He has been remade. Both trailers have gangs, instead of one person fighting people alone. Both films had a big gap between the release dates. Hardcore Henry was first to be released in 2015, and then suicide squad came a year later in 2016.

The modern incarnation, the Suicide Squad, is an antihero
"strike team" of incarcerated, death row supervillains. They would
rather be villains than prisoners, so they make a deal with the government to
become ‘superheroes’. Whereas, in Hardcore Henry he had no choice but to become
violent.
Hardcore Henry was distributed by STX Entertainment. It is a
private business that was founded by Bill McGlashan and Robert Simmonds. STX
Entertainment is not a well-known distributor because they have only
distributed a few films, including ‘The Boy’ and ‘The Gift’. Whereas, ‘Suicide
Squad’ was distributed by Warner Bros. Warner Bros is known for ‘Harry Potter’,
‘The Lego Movie’ and ‘Charlie and the Chocolate Factory’.
Film Promotion
Films can be promoted in many ways. For example by posters, billboards, trailers, social media and general publicity.
Suicide squad first released a poster to entice the public. The poster had each main characters identities shown as skulls. Each skull had a certain piece of characteristic from the cast, for example, Harley Quinns hair can be identified, Deadshots skull is wearing his eye patch. In the second poster released, the full identity of the cast is shown but that is all the poster is giving away. However, there is a smiley face drawn in lipstick, this may represent Harley Quinns lipstick.
They then of course brought out trailers, the first trailer debuted at San Diego Comic-Con 2015 and was officially presented as a “First Look” and not a trailer, but it was a trailer. In fact it wasn’t meant to go public at all but after a ton of pirated versions showed up on YouTube it was finally officially released. And when it was it was accompanied by a terse statement from WB that, essentially, the fans were to blame for it not being a special treat for SDCC attendees. The second trailer – actually the first official trailer since what came before was billed as a sizzle reel – starts off by introducing us to the team that’s being assembled as well as their powers. So we meet Dead shot, Harley Quinn, Killer Croc and others who are the worst of the worst, according to Amanda Waller. They’re given their assignment and after that we get all kinds of shots of the mayhem that goes along with that mission as things explode and more. There are a couple breakout moments for Robbie as Harley, which isn’t surprising, and we get a few more shots of the Joker. Another new trailer debuted during the MTV Movie Awards that’s just as good as the first. We again get the premise, that this team is being created as a contingency against very bad situations. So they’re assembled and told the situation, which is that they’re on a very short leash. After that it’s less about the story and more about just showing off the mayhem they cause while executing the mission. One more trailer was released at the time of this year’s San Diego Comic-Con. It features footage over a few of the songs from the movie’s soundtrack and provides a little more detail on the story and what the Squad has been assembled for.
They also have an official films website, the first thing that greets you when you load the official website is the over-the-top cartoonish key art, the one where they all form the shape of a mushroom cloud. There are buttons at the bottom of the page encouraging you to buy tickets or watch the trailer. Once you start scrolling down the page there are a few features that you see.
On social media the movie had Facebook, Twitter and Instagram profiles, on which the studio shared images and videos along with lots more, including promoting cast appearances on TV and elsewhere. The studio also created a sponsored Snapchat filter for the movie that let people adopt the look of The Joker, obviously playing off the focus in the campaign on that character. This was able to reach many snapchat users and helped to encourage them to go watch the film.
Carrera: Offered a sweeps to send a lucky winner to the red carpet premiere of the movie.
Splat Hair Colour: They ran a “Harley Quinn Inspired Colour Look” contest, in keeping with that character’s wild look and is offering co-branded packaging with a couple of Harley-inspired colours.
Suicide Squad Synergy
Dodge (the cars), was used a numerous amount of times. This gained great publicity for the motor company because of the success of the film.
