The Supernatural Genre
Supernatural horror films is a sub-genre of horror. These include ghosts, demons, or other supernatural occurrences. They often include a plot to do with horror, and the themes are often of afterlife, the devil or demonic possession.
The Ward
The opening titles of 'The Ward' allows the audience to know the genre of the film. Within the first 20 seconds there have been images of a dark ward and in the distance, through the window, bolts of lightning can be seen. Bolts of lightning can symbolise fear. The Celts thought lightning bolts represented an area of a sacred place, this links to the idea that when someone is demonically possessed they need to be left alone and somewhere they feel comfortable. In psychiatric wards, they used to bring in vicars or nuns in-order to help out the patients because they believed that only people linked with spiritualism can help them. They use images of old torture devices. This is then compared by the many images of modern torture devices. This shows how they have changed over the years, they have become more psychological rather than painful.
The constant shattering of the glass may represent the patients overcoming what has happened to them. They are trying to break though their illnesses. However, this can also show how their lives have been so distorted and broken that they can never be fixed. In the seventh photo, the glass has shattered over his face. This shows how his life is breaking in front of his eyes.
The audience knows instantly who has produce the movie because it is shown in bold at the beginning of the clip. Throughout the video, the names of the people involved with the film are very simplistic and they are coloured white. White represents purity, patients in psychiatric wards wear white cloaks.
The target audience is most definitely for the older generation from 18+. This is because of the amount of mistreatment and harm.
The Conjuring
In the opening titles of 'The Conjuring' there are two pictures showing two families. This shows the families who are involved in The Conjuring. The pictures are very old and I can tell this because of the clothing they are wearing, this instantly sets the time period of when the haunting happened. The long shot photo of the house shows the audience where the events happened, this makes it seem more realistic. The name of the director is then shown over the house. It is a dark background and the writing is white, this makes the name stand out more so then we know exactly who was behind the making of the film.
The next photo, after the house image,is of a newspaper article and it is prominent that the article is about ghost hunting. This is prominent because it is the story line of the whole film. The following image is of the lecture, given by the ghost hunters. It shows that everyone in the audience are intrigued to what they have to say. They are the experts of their field of work. They may be giving advice, what to do when this happens to you. The Ku Klux Klan are in the next image, they were a significant group back when The Conjuring occurred. They were performing sacrifices on innocent people, this may have sparked up the haunting on the family.
More and more hauntings were happening across the country. Dead bodies were being found, this could be a consequence of the sacrifices and the jobs being done by the ghost hunters. They could be doing more damage than good. This links to the idea of leaving spirits alone because they become angry. Supernatural horrors usually show families agitating the spirit.
In the final picture, the headline is 'Modern Day Ghost Hunting', they are comparing old techniques to the new ones being used by different ghost hunters.
